Maruti Suzuki Working On Compact MPV Based On Spacia, Deets Here

The Company’s long-term plans include introducing a Suzuki Spacia-based compact MPV by 2026.

Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch a mini multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) based on the Suzuki Spacia in the Indian market in 2026.

Maruti is reportedly working on a small and reasonably priced MPV for the Indian market. The three-row mini MPV, codenamed YDB, will sit below the Maruti Ertiga and compete with the Renault Triber.

When it arrives in India, the Spacia-based MPV will look different from the model sold in Japan. In order to maximise cabin space, the YDB MPV is likely to retain its overall boxy silhouette, as reported by Autocar.

The India-spec YDB MPV, in contrast to its Japanese equivalent, will experience a number of changes to accommodate regional tastes. Expected to be longer than the Japan-spec Spacia, the Indian model will still fit seven people comfortably within its sub-four-meter dimensions. Meanwhile, cost concerns may force the removal of sliding doors, but the boxy shape will probably stay, highlighting the roominess of the interior.

MARUTI SUZUKI MPV YDB: WHAT TO EXPECT

The compact MPV is expected to have a cleverly designed three-row cabin specifically for the Indian market. Significant interior changes are expected due to the larger size compared to the Spacia, including an expanded feature list. It competes directly with the Renault Triber due to its emphasis on maximising cabin space. It’s unclear if the Indian version will have the ottoman-style extensions on the back seats that are similar to those on the Spacia.

The mini MPV, which is positioned below the popular Ertiga and XL6, will meet the needs of families looking for an affordable but spacious vehicle. Interestingly, Maruti Suzuki intends to sell the compact MPV through its premium Nexa outlets, as per reports.

The Suzuki Spacia is a ‘Kei’ car in Japan, and it has a small 660cc engine. The India-spec YTB, on the other hand, is expected to use the new 1.2-litre 3-cylinder Z-series engine from the upcoming next-generation Swift. This new engine will be paired with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a CVT automatic. The 1.2-litre engine produces 82 bhp maximum power and 108 Nm of peak torque.

Under Maruti’s lineup in India, the new YTB MPV will come after the XL6 and Ertiga models. Renault Triber, the only three-row sub-4-meter MPV available in India at the time of launch, will be its main rival.
