Another NEET Coaching Student Dies By Suicide In Rajasthan’s Kota On International Education Day

As many as 26 students died by suicide at the Rajasthan coaching hub last year. The incident comes on a day when the world is observing International Day of Education.

Kota: In a shocking incident, another student died by suicide in Rajasthan’s Kota on Wednesday. Identified as Mohammed Zaid, the 18-year-old deceased was a resident of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh and was preparing for an engineering exam while living in Jawahar Nagar area of ​​Kota. As many as 26 students died by suicide at the Rajasthan coaching hub last year. The incident comes on a day when the world is observing International Day of Education.

The student died by hanging himself from the fan in his hostel room. As per the preliminary information, the post-mortem of the body kept in the hospital is yet to be done.

He was living in a hostel in Kota’s Jawahar Nagar area. Last night, he was found hanging in his room. It should be noted that the student was reportedly preparing for his second attempt at NEET.

Initial reports suggest that police recovered the body and informed the teenager’s family members about the incident. No suicide note has been found yet from the hostel room, and police are looking into what might have pushed Zaid to take this step.

The latest suicide incident has come as another setback to state government and Kota coaching centres as they tried to tackle the rising student suicide cases.

Last year, the then Ashok Gehlot government had issued guidelines to coaching centres to help reduce students’ stress to prevent such unfortunate incidents.

Earlier this month, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) prepared draft guidelines for coaching institutions to stop misleading advertisements and urged them not to make false claims regarding the success rate or number of students selected.

The Committee for ‘Prevention and Regulation of Misleading Advertisement in Coaching Sector’ met on Monday. The meeting was presided over by Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs and Chief Commissioner of CCPA.

As per the draft guidelines discussed, the coaching institute has to mention the requisite information, with the successful candidate’s photo, rank secured by the successful candidate, course opted for by the successful candidate, duration of the course, and whether it is paid or free.

“Coaching institutes shall not make a claim for 100 percent selection or 100 percent job guarantee or guaranteed preliminary or mains,” the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said.

Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary (Consumer Affairs) and Chief Commissioner (CCPA) stated that the protection of consumer interests is a paramount concern to the CCPA.

He highlighted the need for clarity, specifically in addressing certain aspects related to advertisements in the coaching sector.

The Ministry said that CCPA had taken sou moto action against misleading advertisements by coaching institutes.

“In this regard, CCPA has issued notices to 31 coaching institutes for misleading advertisements and imposed fines on nine of them for misleading advertisements,” an official statement issued by the government said.
