NHAI Fastag KYC Update: The NHAI is considering extending the deadline for the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative until the end of March. The last date to complete FASTag KYC was initially announced as February 29, 2024. However, this deadline might be extended by the NHAI.

The previous order implied that FASTags that are not KYC-compliant will be deactivated post-February 29. According to a report by PTI, the state-owned National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) might extend the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative compliance deadline. The new deadline might be March-end.

According to a senior official, Paytm FASTag users are facing problems due to which the deadline is likely to be extended.

According to PTI, an official stated that due to the Paytm crisis, FASTag users might be granted additional time to transition to the one vehicle-one FASTag norm.

The NHAI has introduced the ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative to streamline the electronic toll collection system and ensure smooth traffic flow at toll plazas. This initiative aims to discourage the practice of using a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or linking multiple FASTags to a single vehicle.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) recently issued advisories to customers and merchants of Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) which urged them to transition their accounts to other banks by March 15. The RBI also clarified that customers of PPBL are allowed to withdraw or utilize balances from various accounts, such as savings bank accounts, current accounts, prepaid instruments, National Common Mobility Cards, and FASTags, without any restrictions, even beyond March 15.

Regarding FASTags, the RBI clarified that users can continue using them for toll payments up to the available balance. However, after March 15, 2024, no further funding or top-ups will be permitted in FASTags issued by Paytm Payments Bank.

FASTag has transformed the electronic toll collection system in India with a penetration rate of approximately 98 percent and a user base exceeding 8 crore. FASTag utilises Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology which enables seamless toll payments directly from the linked prepaid or savings account, thereby enhancing efficiency and convenience for users across the country.
