India slashes LPG cylinder prices by ₹100

LPG Cylinder Prices: India has cut LPG cylinder prices by a steep 100 rupees per cylinder, a move that will ease cost burden on households across the country in the world’s most populous nation that is set to vote for the next government during the summer season.

What did PM Modi say on LPG cylinder prices?

“Today, on Women’s Day, our Government has decided to reduce LPG cylinder prices by Rs. 100. This will significantly ease the financial burden on millions of households across the country, especially benefiting our Nari Shakti,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on Twitter.

By enhancing the affordability of cooking gas, the government also seeks to bolster the welfare of families and promote a healthier environment, Modi said, adding this move aligns with New Delhi’s dedication to empowering women and guaranteeing their ‘Ease of Living’.

LPG cylinder price cut an additional measure

This comes just a day after the government declared its decision to continue providing a subsidy of Rs 300 per LPG cylinder to economically weaker women under the Ujjwala Yojana for the upcoming fiscal year beginning April 1. In October last year, the government had increased the subsidy from Rs 200 per 14.2-kg cylinder for up to 12 refills per year to Rs 300 per cylinder. This Rs 300 subsidy per cylinder was applicable for the current fiscal year, ending on March 31.

The government had also slashed cooking gas prices in August last year by Rs 200 per cylinder ahead of assembly elections in five states.

What will be new LPG gas cylinder prices?

The price of a LPG cylinder for domestic households in Delhi is Rs 903 and today’s reduction would thus take down the price of cooking gas cylinder to Rs 803. In Mumbai, the prevailing rate is Rs 902.5, while Kolkata and Chennai sold it for Rs 929 and Rs 918.50, respectively.

The decision comes ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, dates for which have yet to be announced. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third term in power in the world’s biggest democracy, which however like global nations has been reeling under inflationary pressure that typically is a big issue going into the general elections.

The opposition INDIA bloc has criticised the BJP government for its failure to address the escalating prices in a nation where petrol costs exceed Rs 100 per litre in many regions. The Congress has also voiced concerns about the soaring LPG prices, which have significantly strained household budgets.
