The audio and wearable brand said it is investigating the potential breach that included personally identifiable information (PII) of customers.

This update came days after a Forbes India report claimed that the names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail IDs and customer IDs among other data were leaked on the dark web of about 75,50,000 users. The 2GB data was reportedly leaked by a hacker – ‘ShopifyGUY’ on the breach forum.

“boAt is aware of recent claims regarding a potential data leak involving customer information. We take these claims seriously and have immediately launched a comprehensive investigation. At boAt, safeguarding customer data is our top priority,” boAt said, according to TechCrunch.

The breached data was available for “eight credits” on the dark web, which is roughly two euros (roughly Rs 180), according to Yash Kadakia, founder of Security Brigade. The data could have been available for free on apps like Telegram a few days later, Kadakia added. As per the report, the data was breached in March and was uploaded on the forum this month.

ShopifyGUY told Athenil Media that the breach was possible because of “choppy security measures” implemented by the brand. As per the hacker cited in the report, the data was taken from “Shopify’s API using one of boAt’s access keys” and the company was “not safeguarding their keys.”

The recent reports came to light soon after the boAt’s campaign to mock Apple fans.
