The iPhone maker is tipped to offer a range of AI upgrades at the mega showcase. In a recent update around the OS, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes the initial set of features will not depend on cloud-based processing.

Gurman shared his response in his latest Power On newsletter’s Q and A section to the question: “How much will Apple’s new AI feature rely on the cloud?” The journalist noted that AI features (likely in iOS 18), which could see the light of day on June 10, will likely run on-device entirely.

“It looks like the initial wave of features will work entirely on the device” and there may be “no cloud processing component” to the company’s large language model (LLM). This LLM could power most of the new capabilities. Gurman has previously reported that Apple could offer some cloud-backed features using third-party LLMs.

Apple reportedly held talks with providers like Google, ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Chinese Baidu for partnerships. The company may bring chatbot functionality using any of these models on iOS 18. The company could add cloud-based AI features in the past as the company continues to AI servers, according to MacRumors.

Meanwhile, the upcoming iOS is expected to get generative AI features within Spotlight search, Safari web browser, Apple Music, Messages and more apps. iOS 18 could also include upgrades for Siri voice assistant. These changes will bring Apple devices in line with competition from Android flagships like Samsung and Google.
