Xi Jinping To Meet Joe Biden Today In San Francisco | What To Expect

San Francisco: Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in United States’ San Francisco to meet US President Joe Biden on the sidelines of 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Leaders’ meeting. Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi are set to hold US-China Summit on Wednesday in San Francisco Bay Area.

The meeting at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation would be the first between Biden and Xi Jinping since their talks at the sidelines of the G20 Summit 2022 in Bali, Indonesia.

With the meeting of the two leaders, both the US and China would also be working towards mending their ties, which have been deteriorating since last year. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated that Washington is hopeful for a “constructive conversation in San Francisco” between Biden and Jinping.

What to expect?

Joe Biden and Xi Jinping are expected to discuss numerous issues, which include restoring military-to-military communication between the US and China, a chief objective for Biden, who plans to press Xi on the issue. Conflicts in Israel and Ukraine are also set to be discussed. Areas of potential cooperation like climate change and countering narcotics trafficking, deep disagreements over human rights issues and military escalation in the South China Sea and around Taiwan.

US-China Tensions

Following the spy balloon incident, tensions between the US and China began to rise. These tensions hit another snag after the US disagreed with China’s stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. In China, several people have also been arrested and accused of spying for the US government.

US support for Taiwan has also been a sore point for both countries as China claims that Taiwan is part of its territory and US has been supporting the democratic movement.
