Schools Closed in Chennai, Several Districts of Tamil Nadu Due to Heavy Rain, Chennai University Postpones Exam

Schools and colleges will remain shut today in Thiruvallur, Chengalpattu, and Kanchipuram districts of Tamil Nadu

Schools in Chennai will remain closed today, November 30 due to heavy rain. All schools, colleges, and other educational institutes will also remain shut in the Thiruvallur district today. Schools will remain in Chengalpattu, Ranipet, and Kanchipuram districts as well.

The exams scheduled to be held today at Chennai University also stands postponed. The varsity has yet to announce a new date for the exam. Due to the heavy rain, the examinations have been postponed for the benefit of the students.

According to the Chennai Meteorological Center, there is a possibility of rain in nine districts including Chennai and Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu within the next three hours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an orange alert for Chennai and several other districts in Tamil Nadu for December 2 and 3.

A deep depression over the South Andaman Sea is likely to strengthen into a depression today and become a cyclonic storm on December 2, the Meteorological Department said. Meanwhile, as there is a low atmospheric circulation in northern Sri Lanka, there is a possibility of rain in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till December 5. Further, a very heavy rain warning has been issued in five districts namely Thiruvallur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram on December 2 and 3.

Corporation Commissioner Radhakrishnan said that the officers and employees have been advised to continue working to repair the rain damage. He said that 162 camps have been kept ready for use in Chennai and people should avoid going out in non-essential situations. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has instructed that ministers, legislators, and representatives of local bodies to immediately go to the field and work in the areas affected by heavy rain.

Meanwhile, all schools and educational institutions in Hyderabad are closed today for the Telangana assembly elections. The Collector of Hyderabad had earlier announced today and tomorrow, November 29 and 30 to be public holidays. Around 80 per cent of teachers are scheduled to take part in the election duty on November 30. Beginning December 1, all schools and colleges will resume regular operations.
