ITR Filing: Here’s How To File ITR If Your PAN Card Is Inoperative; Check Details

ITR e-filing: Linking your Aadhaar Card with your PAN card is mandatory for a number of services including filing income tax returns (ITR), claiming tax refunds, opening a bank account, purchase of mutual funds units, Issue of debit/credit cards, conducting bank transactions exceeding Rs.10,000, and lot more. But, if you missed linking your PAN with Aadhaar by the June 2023 deadline and your PAN is inactive, you need not worry as you can still file your income tax return.

The income tax department had previously clarified that an inoperative PAN remains active. The deadline for individuals not requiring an audit for the Financial Year 2023-24 (Assessment Year 2024-25) to file their Income Tax Returns (ITR) is July 31, 2024.

Abhishek Soni, CEO and Co-founder of Tax2win, explains that if you fail to link your PAN with your Aadhaar by the deadline in June 2023 and your PAN is inoperative, you can still file your income tax return, according to Mint. However, Soni clarifies that the verification process won’t involve Aadhaar OTP. Instead, you can utilise alternative methods such as generating an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) through net banking, ATM, or other approved means.

How to file an ITR if your PAN is inoperative?

  • It is essential to note that the process of filing income tax returns remains the same even if your PAN is inoperative.
  • You can simply log in to your account on the income tax e-filing portal and follow the steps outlined for filing income tax returns.
  • Once logged in, click on e-file>income tax return>file income tax return. One can follow the steps and file their ITR with an inoperative PAN for FY 2022-23 (AY 2023-24) on or before July 31, 2023.

How to link Aadhaar number with PAN?

Aadhaar number can be linked with PAN by any of the two ways:

  • Using SMS facility
  • Using facility on e-Filing portal https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal

How to link Aadhaar number with a PAN using SMS facility?

Taxpayer who wants to link their Aadhaar number with PAN is required to send SMS to 567678 or 56161 in following format:

UIDPAN

Example of SMS to 567678 or 56161

UIDPAN 111122223333 AAAPA9999Q

Aadhaar number will be linked with PAN if name and date of birth of taxpayer is identical to Aadhaar and PAN.

How to link your Aadhaar number with PAN using the e-filing portal?

The taxpayer is required to login on the e-Filing portal using his registered username and password. After login, he will get the “link Aadhaar” option under his ‘Profile Settings’.The Aadhaar number will be linked with PAN if the name and date of birth of the taxpayer are identical to the Aadhaar and PAN.
