NEW DELHI: In a big success for security forces, oldest top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen, Mehrazuddin Halwai was gunned down in an encounter in North Kashmir’s Handwara district on Wednesday morning.
“One of the oldest & top-commander of Hizbul Mujahideen terror-outfit Mehrazuddin Halwai alias Ubaid got neutralised in Handwara encounter. He was involved in several terror crimes,” said IGP Kashmir.
Security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation at Pazipora-Renan in the Handwara area of the district on Wednesday morning following information about the presence of terrorists there, the police said.
Halwai was killed in retaliatory action by the security personnel, the police added.
